Why Don't Predators Hunt Adult Elephants?

A pride of lions will test a newborn elephant calf if the mother wanders too far from the herd, and a crocodile will take a young elephant that strays too close to a riverbank at the wrong moment. Neither predator will touch a healthy adult. Something in the biology of a full grown elephant moves it out of reach of every hunter on land, and the reason is not agility, aggression, or a weapon. It is simply mass.

A mature African bush elephant bull can weigh 6,000 kilograms, roughly the combined weight of eighty adult humans. He stands 3.3 metres at the shoulder, tall enough to clear most doorways a person walks through, and he can drink 200 litres of water in a single visit to a waterhole. That scale is not a detail about the animal. It is the starting condition that every other system in the body has to answer to.

The short answer

Adult elephants have no routine predators because their body size crosses a threshold no land predator can profitably challenge. A grown bull or cow carries too much mass, too much strength, and too much herd support for a lion, hyena, or crocodile to risk an attack with any real chance of success. Predation pressure only ever falls on calves and the old or sick, animals whose size or strength has dropped below that threshold. Everything else about the elephant's design, thick skin, huge feet, a long life, follows from having grown past the ordinary rules of the food web.

Three species, one giant body plan

Three living elephant species carry this same basic solution in different forms. The African bush elephant, Loxodonta africana, is the largest of the three and is built for the distance and heat of open savanna and woodland. The African forest elephant, Loxodonta cyclotis, is smaller and darker, with straighter tusks angled downward for pushing through dense vegetation. Genetic testing only confirmed it as its own species in 2000, after millions of years of separation from its savanna cousin. The Asian elephant, Elephas maximus, split from the African lines around six million years ago and carries a domed head, smaller ears, and a trunk that ends in a single finger-like lobe rather than two.

Each of these bodies is a different regional answer to the same underlying problem: how to run a functioning animal at a size that removes it from most predator relationships. Get the species right and the differences make sense as engineering choices for three different landscapes.

Size that rewrites the whole body

Once an animal reaches elephant scale, size stops being just one trait among many and starts setting the rules for the rest of the body. Pregnancy runs 22 months, the longest gestation of any land mammal, because a newborn this large simply takes that long to build. Feeding takes up most of the animal's waking hours, since a body this size needs a daily food intake that would strain a smaller ecosystem to supply. Under each foot sits a thick fatty cushion that spreads several tonnes of weight across a wide surface, which is also why an animal this heavy can move through dry grass almost silently.

Skin built like armor, and a working cooling system

An elephant's skin reaches up to three centimetres thick across the back and sides, thick enough to look like natural armor, yet it thins dramatically behind the ears and at the leg joints, and it stays sensitive enough to register the weight of a single fly landing on it. The deep wrinkles running across that skin are not just texture. After a bath in mud or water, those folds trap moisture and dust, holding it against the body far longer than smooth skin ever could. An elephant that cannot bathe or coat itself in dust runs a real risk of sunburn and overheating, so the wrinkles function as a built-in cooling system for a body too large to lose heat any other way.

A clock hidden in the jaw

Size solves the predator problem, but it creates a different one. An elephant grows six successive sets of grinding teeth across its life, each set migrating forward along the jaw like a conveyor belt as the one in front wears down. When the sixth and final set finally grinds smooth, the animal loses the ability to process tough vegetation and its health declines from there. No predator ends most elephant lives. Worn out teeth do, and that mechanism is worth its own closer look.
