How did wolves become dogs?
Near Bonn, Germany, archaeologists found a grave about fourteen thousand years old holding a man, a woman, and a dog, buried together with the same care given to the two people. Nothing about that burial was practical. It was affection, recorded in dirt, before anyone on Earth had built a city, planted a field, or fired a piece of pottery. Whatever happened between people and wolves, it happened early enough to predate almost every other institution humans would go on to invent.

Every dog alive descends from the gray wolf, with the split occurring somewhere between fifteen thousand and forty thousand years ago. The leading explanation isn't that humans set out to tame wolves on purpose. It's self-domestication: the wolves least afraid of people started scavenging near camps, ate better because of it, and passed that boldness to their pups. Why the process likely started at the rubbish heap
Picture an Ice Age hunting camp with a permanent scatter of bones and scraps around its edge. Most wolves kept their distance, because a wolf's default setting toward anything upright and armed is fear. A handful didn't, and those individuals found a calorie source that cost nothing to catch. That's the whole engine: a bold wolf ate better than a cautious one, so it bred more successfully, and its pups inherited a lower fear threshold along with the appetite for camp scraps.
Humans got something back almost by accident. In 1959, Soviet geneticist Dmitri Belyaev started a breeding program on Siberian silver foxes with a single rule: each generation, only the calmest animals around people were allowed to breed. Nothing else about their appearance or ability mattered, only how relaxed they stayed near a human hand. Lyudmila Trut, then a young biologist, ran the program day to day and would keep leading it for decades after Belyaev's death.
By the tenth generation, foxes were approaching people, wagging their tails, and whining for attention like puppies. By generation forty, without anyone selecting for it directly, those same foxes had floppy ears, curled tails, patchy coats, and smaller skulls, the exact physical package that separates a dog from a wolf. Selecting purely for calm temperament had somehow dragged a whole set of unrelated traits along with it. Researchers now call that bundle domestication syndrome, and it shows up wherever humans have tamed a wild species independently, suggesting one developmental switch controls far more than tameness alone.
What actually changed in the DNA
Behavior is the visible layer, but a 2013 study in Nature found the clearest genetic fingerprint of domestication somewhere unexpected: the ability to digest starch. Dogs typically carry around seven copies of a gene called AMY2B, which produces an enzyme that breaks starch into usable sugar. Wolves carry about two. In practical terms, a dog processes starchy food roughly five times more efficiently than its wild ancestor does.
That shift lines up with humans developing agriculture and dogs living increasingly on grain-heavy camp leftovers. A wolf-like animal that could thrive on the same food humans were eating had an advantage that pure-meat competitors lacked, and the gene count climbed accordingly across the generations that followed.
A partnership that may have decided a bigger contest
One more piece of the puzzle is still a working hypothesis rather than settled fact, but it's taken seriously by researchers: that early dogs helped modern humans outcompete Neanderthals for the same European ground. Neanderthals had lived across the continent for roughly three hundred thousand years, were physically stronger, and had larger brains, yet modern humans displaced them within a few thousand years of first contact. If some modern human groups had tame wolf-dogs helping track and corner game while Neanderthal groups didn't, that's exactly the kind of edge that tips a slow-motion contest for the same food supply.
